DfE VISION FOR THE PRIMARY PE & SPORT PREMIUM

All pupils leave primary school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.

At Charlton Primary, we have worked hard to raise the profile and improve the quality of PE & Sport in the curriculum, both during and beyond the school day. Our work in this area has benefitted from government funding provided to primary schools, in additional to main school funding. Initially the funding was only to be provided for 2013-14 and 2014-15, but since has been extended until 2020. Schools receive PE & Sport Premium Funding based on the number of pupils in Years 1 to 6.

We continue to embed a whole school approach to promoting healthy lifestyles and continued professional development.

Our 5 key areas are:

1. The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles.
2. Maintain the high profile of PE and Sport across the school.
3. Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and Sport.
4. Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils.
5. Increased participation in competitive sport.

PRINCIPLES FOR THE ALLOCATION OF FUNDING

To ensure that our PE & Sport Premium is spent in the most effective way the following principles have been agreed by the PE & Sport Co-coordinators together with the Executive Headteacher:

✓ Provide high quality PE & Sport delivered by well trained staff.

✓ Extend our range of school sports clubs, including a Change4Life Club for our least active pupils.

✓ Increase pupils’ participation in competitive sporting events (both intra and inter).

✓ Run a range of sports activities with other schools.

✓ Identify pupils who do not participate in sporting activities beyond the school day, and provide support and encouragement to enrol them in an activity of their choice.

✓ Monitor and evaluate spending of the Premium to demonstrate impact on outcomes for pupils.

✓ PE & Sport Council to be actively involved in the decision-making and evaluation processes.

HOW DO WE SPEND OUR PREMIUM

Details as to how we have spent the Sports Premium are detailed in the documents below. But, in general terms, a significant proportion of the premium is typically allocated toward the cost of a specialist PE teacher to support high quality PE lessons across the school, we also allocate budget funds to:

• Buying into the Vale Sport Partnership.

This brings the following benefits:

• Access to a wider School Games offer – Increased pupil participation in school games, and inter-school competitions and tournaments.
• Provide a well-managed school sport partnership structure that is over seen by a School Sports Co-ordinator.
• Facilitation of regular networking opportunities for the PE Co-ordinator.
• Supports the development and delivery of intra-school competitions and festivals.
• Purchasing specialist equipment and teaching resources including new playground equipment for the children to use at break and lunchtimes.
•  Expanding our after-school sports provision.
• Offering a Change4Life Club, helping children build a healthier lifestyle, which is now in its sixth year.
• Buying into the Youth Sports Trust CPD programme which offers a wide variety of high quality CPD resources for staff in various aspects of PE and Sport.
• Dedicated PE co-coordinator time
• Enrichment through PE and Sport taster activities

IMPACT OF SPENDING ON PE & SPORT PARTICIPATION AND ATTAINMENT

Being awarded, the Gold Quality Mark (19/20, 19/18, 18/17, 17/16, 16/15) is recognition of the hard work and commitment that, as a school, we have to providing high quality PE and Sport, and its significant contribution to improving the life chances of children and young people.

The school was last inspected by Ofsted in May 2019; the visiting inspector identified that the PE and Sports Premium was being effectively spent. Increased provision within and beyond the school day gives pupils opportunities that they would not normally have, therefore widening horizons for more children and promoting healthy lifestyles.
