Art

Being an Artist
‘Every child is an artist, the problem is staying an artist when you grow up’

Pablo Picasso

“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”

At Charlton, our Art & Design curriculum aims to engage, inspire and challenge children, through exposure to a variety of art and artists. We believe that there are three core elements to Art and Design:

· Skills

· Knowledge

· Exposure to art

Children are explicitly taught about artists, their work, its context and artists’ influencers and their influence so that they are equipped with a breadth of knowledge in this area. In addition, artistic skills are also explicitly taught so that children have confidence to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

Throughout the Art and Design curriculum, children are encouraged to think critically, using their evaluative and analytical skills to develop their own appreciation of art and design.

Through the teaching of specific artists ad pieces of art, children learn how art and design is reflected in and has shaped our society and its history.

Our Art and Design curriculum provides children with opportunities to explore different mediums of creative art including drawing, painting, sculpture and craft. As such, children not only learn about great artists, but they also learn about the work of craft makers, sculptors, architects and designers.
